Works have begun to upgrade a major access road used by tourists and recreational fishers near Borroloola.
The pavement upgrade of Batten Road, the major road for the King Bay Recreation Reserve, is being completed by Roadtech Constructions.
The $900,000 project, 25km north or Borroloola will provide improved road safety and access for local residents, tourists, caravan park guests and heavy vehicles.
Batten road runs along the McArthur River floodplain and is inundated during the wet season restricting access to the King Ash Bay fishing village
The works will benefit the fishing community and local businesses, particularly with the popular fishing competition held at King Ash Bay which attracts inter-state visitors.
Batten Rd also serves as an access road for Traditional Owners to access their lands on the Pellew Islands group.
The project scope is to reform the existing road profile and import gravel to form a new pavement, construct a new floodway and two culverts.
This project is part of the Roads to Recovery (R2R) Programme, which is fully funded by the Australian Government.
The Northern Territory Government has been allocated $42.041 million over five years to fund projects under the Roads to Recovery Programme.
