Annual Jingili Science Expo a hit with students

Department of Education

Jingili Primary School students have participated in activities that highlight the importance that science plays in everyday life, as part of the annual Jingili Science Expo.

This year, 14 organisations volunteered to set up a stall on the school oval and conduct activities that engage students in scientific endeavours in a fun and enjoyable way.

Jingili Primary School principal Carin Symonds said “Students love the Science Expo as it gives them an opportunity to be hands on and see science in action in the real world”.

“Science is a perfect vehicle to complement the natural curiosity that children have about the world,” Ms Symonds said.

“Science promotes questioning, looking at things in new ways, collaboration, patience and perseverance.

“We want children to understand how science plays a role in their lives every day and the amazing impact science has had on changing the world.”

The Jingili Science Expo was established in 2014 by Mr John Rivas and his wife Edna, both retired teachers, in a bid to develop students’ interest in discovering what science is all about.

“The Science Expo is aimed at providing students the opportunity to develop scientific enquiry,” Mr Rivas said.

“Exposing the students of Jingili Primary School to scientific enquiry can help them to understand the things that happen in their surroundings and those inside their body.”

Ms Symonds said the school is grateful to the following people and organisations that participated in today’s event;

• Hearing Services                                                    • NT Police

• Crocodylus Park                                                     • Cancer Council

• Darwin City Council                                                • Power and Water

• Territory Wildlife Park                                             • Road Safety

• Animal Wildlife Sanctuary                                       Animal Management

• St John’s Ambulance                                              • A Middle School science teacher

• NT Fire and Rescue Services                                 • Jingili Primary School Kitchen Garden program

School-based activities like the Science Expo show the relevance of science and inspire young people to take on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects.

The National STEM School Education Strategy 2016 -2026 is a renewed national focus ensuring that all young Australians are equipped with the necessary STEM skills and knowledge to succeed.
