Alice Springs artist Henry Smith is set to ‘wow’ visitors with the launch of his latest solo exhibition, New Works, opening at the Araluen Arts Centre on Friday, 20 May.
Director of Araluen Cultural Precinct Dr Mark Crees is thrilled to continue Smith’s history of exhibiting at the Araluen Arts Centre.
“Smith’s latest exhibition is very exciting as it showcases a series of paintings representing the desert landscape in almost abstract terms,” Dr Crees said.
“This solo exhibition highlights an ongoing enquiry into ways of painting and rendering the desert landscape.
“The paintings in New Works represent the landscape, with places at once familiar and ambiguous dissolving into purely abstract shape, form and colour.
“There is a combined tension and harmony in these paintings as they shift between the figurative and the abstract in front of the viewer. We are excited for our visitors to see it."
New Works is the result of Smith’s 20 years of studio and field work but also an indicator of future experimentation.
The exhibition will officially be opened by artist Deborah Clarke, with a performance by a capella group, The Shavings, on Friday 20 May in the Sitzler Gallery at the Araluen Arts Centre.
The exhibition will run until Sunday 26 June. Visitors are encouraged to join Henry Smith on Saturday 21 May at 11.30 am as he delivers an artist floor talk about his work.
