Northern Territory Government

Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade Territory's Chief Vet at Katherine Show

14 July 2022

The Northern Territory’s Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr Sue Fitzpatrick will be at the Katherine Show to discuss biosecurity threats including lumpy skin disease (LSD) and foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) tomorrow.

As part of her talk, Dr Fitzpatrick is focused on building broader awareness of what’s happening in the region, providing information about diseases, preparedness and potential impacts on the Northern Territory.

Industry are encouraged to attend and participate.

Dr Fitzpatrick will be on hand at the RaboTruck tomorrow from 11am-2pm, along with staff from the Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade (the department) to take questions on a variety of livestock biosecurity issues.

Dr Fitzpatrick said the Katherine Show presents a great opportunity for members of the community and the Territory livestock industry to learn more about the signs of FMD and LSD, and what to do if they see a suspect case.

The department has partnered with the NT Cattlemen’s Association and Rabobank for this year’s shows to bring a range of speakers and useful content to the RaboTruck stage.

Staff from the department will be participating in the Katherine Show Days from 15-16 July and at the Darwin Show from 22-23 July.

Quotes from the Northern Territory’s Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr Sue Fitzpatrick

“Foot and Mouth Disease and Lumpy Skin Disease are not present in the Northern Territory, however we have significant concerns these diseases could make their way here very soon.

“The department is working with the Territory livestock industry and other stakeholders as well as the Australian government and other states on biosecurity measures to reduce the risk of this from occurring.

“Nevertheless, we need the all members of the community to keep a watch for signs of both these diseases.

“The impact of either one would be devastating to the Territory and national economy and have long-lasting social and environmental impacts.”
