As part of National Road Safety Week, community organisations and Territory schools are invited to secure funding from the Road Safety Community Grants program.
The Northern Territory Government’s 2016 Road Safety Community Grants program enables community groups to deliver road safety initiatives to reduce the risk of death and injury on Territory roads.
Department of Transport Chief Executive Andrew Kirkman said the 2016 road safety grants would empower community groups at a local level and raises awareness about the importance of road safety being a shared responsibility for everyone.
“I would encourage any school or community organisation that has a creative idea to help improve or promote road safety to make a grant application,” Mr Kirkman said.
“Grants are available up to $5000 per organisation, although applications seeking more funding for larger more complex initiatives can be made and may be approved under specific conditions outlined in the grant guidelines.”
Mr Kirkman said the grants allow government, business and the community to work together to target better road safety outcomes. Applications close 1 June.
“In 2015, 33 organisations received around $150 000 in funding over the two rounds,” Mr Kirkman said.
“The successful projects have been wide ranging and included bus advertising, educational theatre, video competitions and school bicycle education initiatives.”
A second round of the road safety grants program is planned for November. For further information on how to apply, visit roadsafety.nt.gov.au.
In addition to the grants program a Family Fun Day will be held at the Parap Road Safety Centre this Saturday and showcase the facility as a family friendly location where parents can bring their children to practice bike riding in a safe off-road environment.
Hector the Road Safety Cat will be in attendance, there will be children’s activities, face painting and giveaways.
In addition a similar family fun open day will also be held at the Newland Park, Alice Springs Road Safety Centre later in the year.
