Following extensive community, government and industry consultation the Northern Territory Planning Commission has recommended the Darwin Mid Suburbs Area Plan to the Minister for Lands and Planning, Mr David Tollner.
It is anticipated the Minister will exhibit the draft Area Plan for 28 days as a proposed amendment to the Northern Territory Planning Scheme.
Planning Commission Chairman Mr Gary Nairn said the development of the Mid Suburbs Area Plan was another important step in providing responsible strategic plans for Darwin over the next 40 to 50 years.
Mr Nairn said, “The Mid Suburbs Area Plan responds to expected population growth and has been developed after upfront consultation with those who matter the most - the residents of the Mid Suburbs - as well as local government, community and industry groups.
“Over 300 residents took time to speak to the Commission, with over 50 submissions received, and this feedback has directly influenced the final area plan.”
Future growth in the Mid Suburbs will be focused to targeted areas, such as on Progress Drive near the Nightcliff Activity Centre, to provide housing options to future residents, ensuring the majority of the area will continue to enjoy the tropical characteristics that make up the Mid Suburbs.
Extensive infrastructure and traffic studies have also been completed to ensure all levels of government will be better able to plan for future upgrading to works where needs are identified in the area plan.
“The Area Plan ensures expected growth can be catered for, while protecting the lifestyle of the residents in this area,” Mr Nairn concluded.
