Department of Infrastructure unveils memorial for much-loved colleague in Katherine

Family, friends and colleagues of respected long-time Katherine resident, Mal Hunnam, have gathered in the town for the unveiling of a memorial in his honour.

The Department of Infrastructure has recognised Mal’s 24-years of service with the Northern Territory Government with a unique roadside tribute.

A plaque and two fully-grown boab trees have been planted on the Stuart Highway in the vicinity of the Bicentennial Road intersection.

“Mal was a big part of our tight-knit Katherine team, and his colleagues were all very sad to hear of his passing,” said David McHugh, Department of Infrastructure Chief Executive.

“Working for the Australian and Northern Territory Government’s for around 40 years, Mal’s career focus was initially in buildings, before he moved into roads.

“Based in Katherine for 24 years, he was involved in the construction of most of the significant bridge projects in the region including the Bradshaw, McArthur River and Victoria River bridges.”

Many of Mal’s family still live in the Northern Territory and are appreciative of the kind gesture of a memorial.

“Dad was proud of his work achievements in Katherine, and made lasting friendships with colleagues, some of whom he worked with in New Guinea before moving to the town in the early 1990’s”, said Mal Hunnam’s eldest son, Jeff Hunnam.

“The two boab trees are a fitting part of the memorial as Dad would often speak of their uniqueness.

“On behalf of the rest of the family, thankyou to all involved in making this memorial possible, and to colleagues and friends who attended the unveiling. We know Dad would be humbled to be remembered this way."

Mal Hunnam passed away on 28 December 2015 surrounded by his loved ones after suffering a long illness. He was 72 years old.

He is survived by his wife Lena, seven children and 11 grandchildren.

The Department of Infrastructure acknowledges the community spirit shown by Katherine businesses that helped make the memorial possible. Thank you to the Perner Family for the donation of the boab trees, Northern Machinery Sales for transportation, soil and planting, Cosa Crane Hire for erecting the trees, and Katherine Tilt Tray for loading and transporting the trees.
