Students to try their hand at Health

Department of Health

The Top End Health Service is today holding a ‘Health Careers to Try’ event to showcase the many different health career pathways available to Territory students.

Pauline Mattschoss, Nursing Director for the Nursing and Midwifery Education and Research Centre, is excited to show off the inner workings of health.

“The ‘Health Careers to Try’ event provides Territory senior secondary school students with the opportunity to experience what it is like to work in the health sector across a range of occupations in a safe and supported environment,” Pauline said.

“Students have access to simulated learning techniques, such as the ‘Sim Mum’ a high-tech birthing simulator, and learning how to read an X-ray.”

Groups of students will be rotating through several health career stations to provide exposure to multiple health careers.

The Northern Territory Government is providing a $2000 ‘Youth Engagement Grant’ to assist in facilitating the event. This is double what was provided last year.

The event was developed as part of National Youth Week and aims to introduce school students to health careers they may be unfamiliar with and encourage young Territorians to take an interest in the health sector.
