Parks and Wildlife Commission of the Northern Territory will be holding a Heritage Open Day and Markets this Sunday in the Historic Precinct at the Alice Springs Telegraph station, as part of National Trust Heritage Week celebrations.
Parks and Wildlife NT Park Ranger Dawn Morgan said the Heritage Open Day and Markets would commemorate the heritage of Alice Springs through the people, places and faces and would also give visitors the opportunity to explore old heritage buildings which were usually closed to the public.
“The event will offer a large array of market stalls including unique arts and crafts, information stalls and delicious tasting foods from around the world.
“We hope that by partnering with the market’s stall holders that we can provide a variety of experiences for young and old, new and long-time residents,” Ms Morgan said.
“Alice Springs Telegraph Station has a very rich history so we’re excited to open the doors to the old buildings and allow the public to learn more about the life on the Old Telegraph Line.
“Visitors will have the chance to discover what it was like to live in the Managers Residence and prepare food in the Managers Kitchen, both of which are not normally open to the public.
“We’re also inviting the public to send a morse code telegram to family and friends at the Old Post and Telegraph Office with the visiting Morsecodian’s for a gold coin donation.
“Visitors can see the lace makers at work, chat to an 1887 gold prospector from Arltunga, get up close and personal to meet the Mounted Police horses and practise their skills with old style kids’ games and activities.
“Sit back under the shady trees between the old buildings and soak up the atmosphere. The day will offer something for everyone to enjoy.”
The Heritage Open Day and Markets will be held on Sunday 17 April, 9.30am – 1pm and it will be free entry.
