A medium-security prisoner at the Darwin Correctional Centre is now in his 19th day of a hunger strike.
Wayne Hampton, 46, is protesting the rejection of an application to transfer to a prison in Victoria.
Prisoner Hampton is being monitored by DCC health staff, is willingly undertaking regular health checks and tests, is consuming fluids and has agreed to start taking daily vitamins.
Medical staff say they have no immediate concerns for the prisoner’s health.
Prisoner Hampton lodged a second application for transfer to a Victorian prison in April 2015, which was rejected last November.
Prisoner Hampton was sentenced to 24 years imprisonment with a 16-year non-parole period on 12 April 2007 for deprivation of liberty, sex without consent, gross indecency and indecent assault.
He was further found guilty of aggravated assault against a correctional officer at the Alice Springs Correctional Centre on 6 July 2011 and sentenced to a further four years to be served concurrent, giving him a new sentence of 27 years with a non-parole period of 17 years and six months.
Prisoner Hampton will be eligible for parole in early 2025.
