New to town, new to hiking or just looking for something different to do on the weekend? Lace up your boots, it’s time to explore your local park on foot this year with Parks and Wildlife NT.
Parks and Wildlife NT Community Engagement Officer Clare Pearce said the Walk in the Park program is a series of walks in parks throughout Alice Springs and Katherine and will be full of fun, free and first time hiker friendly activities which are a great opportunity to explore the National Parks and Reserves with like-minded people.
“Many people want to spend time wandering along the beautiful tracks and trails in National Parks and Reserves, but for so many reasons have not yet had the chance to do so,” Ms Pearce said.
“Walking in nature is an amazing experience and with benefits for mental and physical health a walk in the park is more than just following the trail markers.
“Heading on a walk in the park is a great way to spend a morning, resetting the mind and body for another week ahead, with the added excitement of spotting some interesting plants and animals along the way.”
The 2016 Walk in the Park series kicks off in April, with the Stuart Walk at the Alice Springs Telegraph station and the Leliyn Loop Walk in Katherine.
Suitable for beginners, the series will run until September and take in a number of different walks in local National Parks in Alice Springs and Katherine
All participants will need to be able to walk at least three kilometres over an uneven track and carry their own drinks and snacks for the day.
Numbers are limited to ten participants per event. Bookings are essential and can be made by sending an email to clare.pearce@nt.gov.au for events in Katherine or susie.pendle@nt.gov.au in Alice Springs.
