Songlines on Screen

Everyone loves a good yarn and there is no doubt that the Songlines on Screen initiative from Screen Australia and NITV provides that.

Screen Territory Director Penelope McDonald said filmmakers from the Northern Territory were well represented in the series, which would have a booked out premiere screening tonight at BCC Cinemas Darwin.

“The majority of these films are from the Northern Territory and it’s a great opportunity for Territorians to showcase their work,” she said.

“Filmmakers and elders from remote regions of Western, Northern and Central Australia have come into Darwin for an intensive five day workshop, developing the second series.”

This new initiative brings 10 short films about creation stories to the screen. The films represent the strong connection between Aboriginal people and the land and culture as told throughout time by the way of creation songs.

Songlines on Screen is a special collaboration between Screen Australia and NITV, with support with grants from Screen Territory for the Northern Territory productions.

This initiative has provided a vital opportunity for the recording of Indigenous songlines, which have incorporated the full spectrum of storytelling including dance, song, art, body painting and sites of significance.

Continued support towards the practicing and sharing of songlines on country will ensure the wellbeing of both the country and its people.

At the same time it is giving new filmmakers a voice.

Tonight’s screening is booked out, however NITV will broadcast the short films later in the year.
