Winsome Jobling: the nature of paper exhibition launches at MAGNT
Darwin-based artist, Winsome Jobling’s first major survey exhibition opened yesterday at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory.
Jobling has lived and worked in the Territory since 1982 and has been evolving her paper based art for over 30 years.
The exhibition features 60 works spanning 20 years and includes handmade paper art works as installations, sculptures, prints and artists books.
MAGNT Director Marcus Schutenko said this exhibition was the second in a series of solo exhibitions at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory celebrating the talents of our local Northern Territory artists.
“The exhibition showcases a range of stunning works from the MAGNT collection, as well as from 18 private collections,” he said.
Winsome Jobling said on being told of MAGNT’s proposal to hold a retrospective of my work, her initial reaction was absolute surprise.
“Me?” she said. “On reflection, I have been working as an artist since I arrived in Darwin in 1982.
“I am inspired by the landscape, the space and the Indigenous view of country. I welcome this exhibition as an affirmation of my work as an artist whose primary medium is handmade paper.”
Co-curator Angus Cameron, Director Nomad Art said Winsome Jobling conveys insights into Northern Territory life and culture through her unique fibre based art.
“Jobling sources and harvests plants from across the Territory, transforming natural materials into installations that reveal intimate perceptions of the environment, history, philosophy, politics and culture,” he said
MAGNT Exhibitions Coordinator and Co-curator of the exhibition Wendy Wood said seeing Jobling’s art developed over many years had been incredibly inspiring.
“MAGNT is proud to present a survey exhibition by such a prolific and innovative local artist,” she said
The MAGNT received funding support from the Australia Council for the Arts to publish a beautiful, full colour book reflecting the exhibition.
The funding has also enabled a series of children’s papermaking workshops which will take place in the April school holidays, as well as an artist’s talk.
The exhibition opened yesterday and will run until Sunday 21 August 2016. Books are available for purchase on the MAGNT online bookshop and The Museum Shop.
