The general public can now find and download Northern Territory Geological Survey (NTGS) products, mineral industry exploration reports and data, petroleum well reports and data from one platform.
Dorothy
Close, Acting Executive Director Geological Survey, Department of Mines and
Energy, said the Geoscience Exploration and Mining Information System (GEMIS),
is a key platform, used to deliver geoscientific information and data to the
exploration industry and general public.
“New
collections are progressively being added to GEMIS. The petroleum wells
collection was added in March 2015, and the NTGS product catalogue was added this
week,” said Ms Close.
The new product catalogue provides access to over 1000 products, including geological maps, geophysical data, geoscientific reports and other geological datasets.
GEMIS stores the products as objects in a database together with the metadata, making referencing and linking to particular titles easy and reliable.
Prior to the GEMIS launch in 2014, users had to search 7 separate interfaces to find all the available geoscience information and data provided by the Geological Survey.
Over the next two years NTGS will be adding other collections, eventually reducing the 7 separate interfaces to two complimentary interconnected systems.
The proportion of mineral exploration reports available for download in GEMIS has grown from 49 per cent at the launch in 2014 to 90 per cent in March 2016.
“The ongoing development of GEMIS plays an important part in enabling self-service and wider public access to geoscience information whilst increasing staff productivity and allowing more time to be spent on projects, enhancements and service.” Ms Close said.
Upgrading
the online delivery of information and data to the minerals and petroleum
exploration industry is a priority under the Creating Opportunities for Resource Exploration (CORE) initiative
funding.
