Great news for motorsport enthusiasts in Central Australia, with the Territory Government releasing a tender for the much-needed replacement of the track safety fence at Arunga Park Speedway.
The Government has committed $1.8 million to upgrade the facility. This tender to replace the safety fence is the first stage of the overall works planned for the site.
Importantly, the new track safety fence will enable the popular motorsport facility to re-open to the public.
The Arunga Park Speedway has been closed since late last year due to safety concerns associated with the damaged fence.
After more than 40 years protecting both competitors and spectators, the concrete safety barrier collapsed in several sections following heavy rains in Alice Springs.
While the track safety fence that was originally constructed was considered more than adequate for its day, the safety aspects of motorsport have become increasingly more sophisticated, standards have changed, and speeds of racing vehicles and bikes have increased.
When the tender is awarded, the works will see the safety fence completely replaced - the new track fence will be of the highest rating to provide enhanced safety for competitors and spectators.
The tender will be advertised for 4 weeks, and once awarded, work should commence in April and be finished by June 2016.
