Darwin Mid Suburbs Draft Plan released for comment

Northern Territory Planning Commission (NTPC)

The Darwin Mid Suburbs Draft Area Plan is ready for discussion by residents and stakeholders. Planning Commission Chairman, Gary Nairn, released the plan today, saying he was keen to discuss the draft plan at local markets, shopping centres and other venues.

“The Draft Area Plan is Stage 2 of our consultation process and follows preliminary consultations in November 2015 with community and stakeholders,” Mr Nairn said.

“This is a long-term plan that will ensure future land use in the Mid Suburbs keeps pace with the changing needs of our community while retaining the tropical character of the area,” he said.

“In Stage 1, we wrote to around 10,000 residents and property owners and spoke with around 200 people at industry and group meetings, shopping centres and markets. We met with industry, government and community stakeholders and held community meetings and a design workshop.

“We received 29 submissions and a wide range of face-to-face feedback about the issues that matter to the Darwin Mid Suburbs.

“This feedback has been used to help shape the Draft Plan. We have also incorporated the results of several recent infrastructure studies, including social infrastructure, to assist in planning any upgrades to essential services.

“Planning is a detailed and complex process that works best when the community and stakeholder engage with planners at multiple points along the planning journey.

“The draft plan is ready for you to view and discuss with us. We will again hold information stalls at local markets and shopping centres – details will be on our website,” Mr Nairn said.

Stage 2 consultations continue until late March 2016. Then revised plan will be developed for exhibition as a proposed Planning Scheme Amendment within the Northern Territory Planning Scheme – that will be Stage 3 of the process.
