Australia Day Fun Run

Darwin Waterfront Corporation

Over 4000 Territorians are expected to kick off their Australia Day celebrations with the annual Australia Day Fun Run tomorrow at the Darwin Waterfront.

“The fun run is not just for competitive runners, but for anyone who wants to get into the Australia Day spirit,” Kiya Gill, Executive Director Australia Day Council said.

“There’s 3km and 5km route options and participants can choose to run, walk or stroll their way to the finish line.”

“It’s important that we get together as a community on Australia Day to celebrate our lucky country.”

“We encourage people to get dressed-up, and those that do will be up for some great prizes.”

For the sixth year in a row, INPEX and the Ichthys LNG Project will be a major sponsor of the fun run.

INPEX General Manager Darwin, Sean Kildare, said officially starting the race was a highlight each year.

“It’s always fantastic to see so many Territorians and visitors turn out each year to kick start their Australia Day celebrations,” Mr Kildare said.

“This year, I’m looking forward to bringing my young son along to be part of this great community event.”

Registrations open from 6am with the race starting at 7am at the Darwin Convention Centre.

The race will finish in the Darwin Waterfront parklands with a free sausage sizzle from Rotary NT, water from NT Beverages, face painting, balloon twisting, a water slide and live music.

This year there will be a special guest appearance from the Australia Day NT Ambassador and Australian actress Paula Duncan.

The Wave Lagoon will be opened early at 8am and the Recreation Lagoon will be patrolled by lifeguards from 7am.

Cost of entry in the fun run is via a gold coin donation on the day, which will be collected by volunteers prior to the run commencing.
