A 25 year old prisoner has been recaptured by Ali Curung police after absconding last night from the Barkly Work Camp (BWC) at Tennant Creek.
Warren BELIA was serving a sentence of seven months and 14 days commencing 19 November 2015 for a high range drink driving offence..
He was eligible for release on 30 June 2016 and had been transferred to the BWC on 3 December 2015.
An alert was raised at approximately 8pm after Prisoner Belia allegedly tampered with his Electronic Monitoring device.
Other prisoners reported seeing vehicle lights on the work camp’s perimeter at this time.
NT Police were immediately notified and the prisoner was apprehended at 11.35pm at Mungkarta, approximately 100 kilometres south of Tennant Creek.
He is currently in the Tennant Creek lockup awaiting transfer to the Alice Springs Correctional Centre (ASCC) where his security rating will be upgraded.
As a result of the abscond the prisoner will serve out the remainder of his sentence at ASCC.
