The NT Department of Correctional Services is reviewing security arrangements for youth offenders appearing in the Darwin Magistrates Court following the absconding from custody this afternoon from Court 5.

 Commissioner Mark Payne said the youth jumped over the dock and fled through the court’s fire escape doors at about 3pm but was recaptured by police within 30 minutes.

 “The Department takes every abscond from custody very seriously, particularly in locations where members of the public are in close proximity,” he said.

 “As always we will review the circumstances surrounding this matter and adopt any further preventative measures that may be necessary.”

 Commission Payne thanked all those involved, and particularly the NT Police, in taking the youth back into custody in such a timely and professional manner.
