International Day of People with a Disability is a time to consider the challenges of others

Department of Health

Territorians are being urged to use today’s International Day of People with a Disability to consider those living with a disability.

Annie Rily, Acting Senior Director of the Office of Disability, said thousands of Territorians were among an estimated four million Australians living with a disability.

“On this International Day of People with a Disability it is worth considering how we can best promote positive changes to help make our community more inclusive for everyone,” Ms Rily said.

Ms Rily has announced a $30,000 Sporting Activity Access Grant for Total Recreation to develop a futsal competition to provide access to a sporting program for people with a disability.

Total Recreation is proposing a weekly futsal competition for up to 20 players. Futsal is an increasingly popular form of five-a-side indoor football.

Total Recreation sees its “Futs for All” program as a first step to sending a Territory team to the 2019 INAS Global Games in Brisbane.

“A program like the one being promoted by Total Recreation is a great way for people living with a disability to access physical activity and social interaction.

“This is not just a great way to get fit but I see this program as a wonderful vehicle to help break down barriers for people with a disability.”

Ms Rily also announced the opening of applications for the 2015-16 Northern Territory Disability Scholarships Program.

The annual scholarships are offered to people working in the disability services sector to encourage them to boost their skills and increase their career opportunities.

Four scholarships each worth $2500 are being offered for people working in the disability sector as part of the Government’s on-going efforts to improve the delivery of disability services in the Northern Territory, Ms Rily said.
