Uluru voted Australia’s most important travel destination

Uluru and the Red Centre has been named the destination every Australian should see in the prestigious annual Australian Traveller People’s Choice Awards.

The awards, handed out last night at a gala event in Sydney, recognise the best travel experiences and destinations for 2015.

“This is a huge honour and fantastic recognition for the Northern Territory and the Red Centre,” said Tourism NT CEO Tony Mayell.

“More than 4000 travellers were surveyed in the Australian Traveller People’s Choice Awards, making it the biggest ever poll of Australian travellers.

“To be voted by readers and as a must-visit holiday destination shows the Northern Territory is at the top of minds of travellers and a stand-out holiday hot spot. We’ve been showing everyone in Australia why they should Do the NT and the amazing adventures they can have in the Red Centre and it looks like these marketing efforts are paying off.

“Just a short direct flight from Sydney, Melbourne, Cairns or Alice Springs, there is so much to see and do at Uluru from incredible sunsets to star-filled skies and experiencing rich indigenous art and culture.

“We’ve also been working hard this year to show off lesser-known tourism gems in the region like the ancient red domes of Kata Tjuta, the nearby incredible salt lakes and Mount Conner through our advertising campaigns and social media initiatives.

“Uluru combined with Alice Springs, the heart of the Outback with its nearby Gorge’s and swimming holes and of course Kings Canyon in Watarrka National Park makes for the ultimate Australian holiday. It’s about time everyone in Australia came and saw the amazing Red Centre.”

The Australian Traveller Magazine said this year's results highlight the domestic tourism renaissance sweeping the country.

"Just the sheer number of votes shows how engaged Australians are right now with their own country. We have started to fall in love with our great continent again,” said Australian Traveller editor Lara Picone.

We love our vast, ochre Outback and the Red Centre and Uluru will always draw in Aussies to experience the wonder of the rock.”

Uluru and the Red Centre beat tourism heavyweights the Great Barrier Reef, Sydney, Tasmania and the Kimberley to take home the award for the category of ‘One destination you would recommend every Australian visit.’

The winners and runners-up of the survey, the largest poll of Australian travellers, are published in the December/January issue of the magazine and online at: http://www.australiantraveller.com/
