Attorney-General hosts Day for Daniel stall at Casuarina Square

Department of Attorney-General and Justice

Attorney-General John Elferink will today host a Day for Daniel free cupcake stall at Casuarina Square to help raise awareness of child safety, protection and harm prevention.

Mr Elferink said Day for Daniel is a National Day of Action aimed at educating children and adults about keeping kids safe and helping them to understand the importance of the need to ‘Recognise, React and Report’ if they feel something is not right.

“The Northern Territory has also become the first jurisdiction in Australia to introduce into Parliament legislation for a sex offender website that is fully accessible by all members of the public,” he said.

“The website is designed to publish the name, image, physical description and general whereabouts of convicted serious child sex and homicide offenders.

“The Bill, known as Daniel’s Law, will be debated during the November sittings of Parliament and I would encourage all members to give it their full support.”

Mr Elferink said members of the public could get behind the Day for Daniel campaign by dropping by the stall above the Food Court on the upper level of Casuarina Square between 11am and 1pm.

“Fact sheets about the ‘Daniel’s Law’ legislation will also be available,” he said.

The objectives of Day for Daniel are:

  • To raise awareness about child safety and protection and to promote a safer community for children
  • To educate children regarding their personal safety and empower them to Recognise, React and Report
  • To provide FREE safety and educational material
  • To honour the memory of Daniel Morcombe
  • To have over 1 million people Australia Wide to participate in Day for Daniel

Day for Daniel is also an opportunity for Australians to make a statement that crimes against children are not acceptable in modern Australia.
