Summer spotlight at Simpsons Gap

Parks and Wildlife Commission of the Northern Territory

Grab your torch and join a Parks and Wildlife Commission NT (PWCNT) Ranger every Friday in November for a night walk at Simpsons Gap.

Susie Pendle, PWCNT Community Engagement Officer, Central Australia and Barkly region, said as the weather warms up, everyone runs for cover from the heat, so at dusk it’s the best time to see our special desert wildlife.

“Discover the life after dark and spot Simpsons Gap inhabitants like the Black-footed Rock-wallaby (Petrogale lateralis), Desert Tree Frog (Litoria rubella), Stimsons Python (Liasis stimsoni), Bats, spiders and insects, as they all come out to enjoy the cooler night air,” Ms Pendle said.

“Learn about these and other nocturnal creatures, and use your torch to spotlight wild animals on this family friendly activity.

“Just because the weather is getting hot, doesn’t mean you can’t visit the park and have a great time!

“Fun for the whole family, make your summer park experience a special one, get out in the evening with a torch and check out what ‘creatures of the night’ you can find.

“With free barbecue facilities at Simpsons Gap, Tjoritja / West MacDonnell National Park, why not bring out a picnic and have a meal first?”

Participants need to wear sturdy closed toe shoes, insect repellent and bring along a torch and water.

These free evening events will be held every Friday in November.

Bookings are essential and places are limited, so get in early to book. Contact Susie Pendle on 8951 8247 or email Susie.pendle@nt.gov.au
