Safety in the croc industry highlighted in national seminar series

NT WorkSafe

A Northern Territory film on safety in the crocodile industry will close a month long series of online safety seminars which has run as part of national Safe Work Month.

Not a croc - health and safety in the crocodile industry supply chain, is part of the Virtual Seminar Series; a free online event showcasing the latest thinking, innovation, research and developments in support of the Australian Work Health and Safety Strategy 2012-2022.

The film, commissioned by NT WorkSafe, highlights how the communication within the crocodile industry’s supply chains and networks have kept serious injuries to a minimum over the past 10 years.

Executive Director for NT WorkSafe Stephen Gelding said the communication within the industry in sharing innovation, training and best practice to improve health and safety is commendable.

“The crocodile industry is a new and innovative industry worth some $25 million annually,” Mr Gelding said.

“The industry is a contributor to the economic and social prosperity of the NT, and with the incentive driven conservation model, the economic benefits are shared with remote Aboriginal communities and other regional communities which contain crocodile habitats.

“However farming the apex predator of Northern Australia carries significant risk to health and safety.

“The industry is at the forefront of scientific research and innovation, and some of the innovations developed to protect workers shows the industry understands the crocodiles and has the welfare of workers in mind.

“The basket used by egg collectors in the wild to create a visual barrier against crocodiles guarding their nest is a good example of this innovation.

“I encourage everyone to watch this well produced film and the other contributions in the 2015 Virtual Seminar Series,” said Mr Gelding.

Not a croc - health and safety in the crocodile industry supply chain is scheduled for release on Friday 30 October 10am (AEDT) from the Safe Work Australia website.
