Hospital receives generous donation

Department of Health

The Alice Springs Hospital will this week take delivery of two pieces of medical equipment to enhance the delivery of care to children.

The Hamilton Transport Ventilator (with neonatal capacity) and the Glidescope Video Laryngoscope, worth a combined $70 000 were donated by Variety, The Children’s Charity and the Joint Rotary Clubs of Alice Springs.

Chief Operating Officer of Central Australia Health Service, Sue Korner said “The transportable neonatal ventilator will enable the hospital to undertake retrieval (and transfer) of babies in remote areas to the hospital and also from our hospital to Adelaide with the Royal Flying Doctor Service.”

Another device to assist in the intubation of critically unwell children is the Glidescope Video Laryngoscope which will be based in the hospital’s Emergency Department. The Laryngoscope enables the operator to see down a child’s throat to the larynx with the aid of a camera.

“We provide services to around 12 500 young patients each year so this equipment will certainly be put to great use and we thank Variety for their generous donation,” said Ms Korner.

The new pieces of equipment are a welcome addition to the constantly expanding resources of the Central Australia Health Service.

Construction of a new $5m teaching and training facility on the hospital campus is well underway along with works which will see the Intensive Care Unit move to a first floor location closer to the new Emergency Department and the surgical ward.

Ms Korner said “The Central Australia Health Service is moving from strength-to-strength as we move forward delivering a new service framework for health services in Central Australia.”
