New mapping by the Department of Lands, Planning and the Environment released today identifies almost 400 properties that are now not affected by storm surge.
The majority of unaffected properties are located in the marina suburbs of Bayview and Cullen Bay.
Storm surge is usually caused by the elevation in sea level attributed to a cyclone’s intensity combined with wind stress build up. The availability of detailed storm surge information allows decision-makers to avoid or minimise risks associated with storm surge inundation before an emergency arises.
The improved mapping has also identified slightly more than 100 properties in the northern suburbs between Fannie Bay and Leanyer with a slightly increased risk of storm surge, although the risk is minimal because there is such a small amount of inundation.
Those land owners and residents whose storm surge status has been changed are currently being notified by letter and leaflet prior to the new maps becoming available on the Department of Land Resource Management website.
The letters advise landowners and residents to check maps and seek advice from engineers and insurers as appropriate.
