Spend some time in a Park this Mental Health Week

Parks and Wildlife Commission of the Northern Territory

Parks and Wildlife Commission NT encourage people during National Mental Health Week to get out and about in one of our Parks or Reserves for their health and wellbeing!

Community Engagement Manager, Emily Findlay says “Parks are used by Territorians for many different reasons, including recreational activities, and as places to meet.

“The huge variety of spaces available in our parks encourage all forms of exercise and allow for a range of healthy outdoor activities like hiking, swimming, mountain biking, canoeing and more.

“One thing that might not be as obvious is the effect of visiting a Park on mental health.

“There are many different studies that point to the benefits of connecting with natural green spaces, either through regular exercise, or just spending 15 minutes sitting in nature, these activities can have lasting positive effects on mental and physical health.

“An extensive review of the research and evidence of the connection between nature and health by Parks Victoria and the School of Health and Social Development, Faculty of Health, Deakin University, found that spending time in nature has been shown to provide rehabilitative and recuperative benefits to those suffering serious physical and mental illnesses.

“Our Parks provide opportunities for all to take advantage of the health benefits of natural green space.

“This week make time to visit a Park for an after work walk, plan a weekend picnic with friends or family, or just take the time to sit in the natural environment, all to benefit your emotional wellbeing.”

There are over 90 parks and reserves in the Northern Territory. The Park and Reserve system encompasses over 45,000 square kilometres, from the arid Centre to the tropical Top End.
