Release of KPMG Independent Travel Review

Department of the Chief Minister

The Northern Territory Government has received the independent review conducted by KPMG into government travel policies and systems.

Department of the Chief Minister Chief Executive, John Coleman, said KPMG was commissioned to conduct the review into current travel controls and procedures to ensure it is getting value for money when procuring travel services.

“The Northern Territory Government is committed to achieving greater value for money and ensuring greater accountability and transparency and will adopt a number of KPMG’s recommendations where appropriate,” Mr Coleman said.

“The review found the NT Government has taken significant steps to improve management of travel by introducing a first whole-of-government travel policy and adopting the use of corporate travel providers.

“Substantial changes have already been made to travel policies and procedures including successfully trialling the use of corporate travel providers since March 2014, which secures significant discount on all air travel booked.

“The review also made a number of recommendations to improve the current systems and practices, including reviewing the use of corporate credit cards to ensure more transparency in government travel transactions.

“Travel practices moving forward will also be regularly reviewed through internal and external audits.”

The contract for a sole provider will go out for tender next month.
