After Dark in the Park

Parks and Wildlife Commission of the Northern Territory

Grab your torch and join Parks and Wildlife Commission (PWCNT) Rangers on a night walk!

“With temperatures getting warmer, now is a great time to get out in the evenings to spot some of the nocturnal inhabitants of our Parks and Reserves.” said Susie Pendle, PWCNT Community Engagement Officer.

“Join us on a series of spotlight walks during the September / October school holiday break at the Alice Springs Telegraph Station, Simpsons Gap or Ormiston Gorge for a chance to see some special native wildlife.

“Spotlighting is a fun activity for the whole family and a different way to visit Parks and Reserves as the days heat up”

Come along to learn some basic spotlighting techniques and discover the park after dark as we spot typical central Australian species like the Black-footed Rock-wallaby (Petrogale lateralis), Euro (Macropus robustus erubescens), Dingo (Canis lupus dingo), Central gecko and lizard species spiders, invertebrates and so much more.

From Monday 28 September to Friday 2 October, After Dark in the Park spotlight walks will be held from 7 pm every night in a different Park. Join us for walks at the Alice Springs Telegraph Station, and in Tjoirtja / West MacDonnell National Park at Ormiston Gorge and Simpsons Gap. Visit the Parks and Wildlife Commission NT website for more details www.parksandwildlife.nt.gov.au

“For those in Tennant Creek, join us on the 15 October at the historical Tennant Creek Telegraph Station to search for Barkly region species including the Black-headed python (Aspidites melanocephalus), Australian green tree frog (Litoria caerulea) and much more!”

Participants need to bring along a torch or spotlight, insect repellent, wear appropriate clothing and wear safe and comfortable footwear.

All night stalks are free and open to the public, including children, however numbers are limited and bookings are essential – contact Susie Pendle 8951 8247 susie.pendle@nt.gov.au to register today!
