Water quality testing at Tennant Creek Hospital

Department of Health

Central Australia Health Service advises that low levels of legionella bacteria have been found during routine water sampling at Tennant Creek Hospital.

As an immediate precaution the system has been disinfected and flushed.

Further precautions have been implemented within the hospital to ensure patient, visitor and staff safety pending the results of the second round of testing, including the supply of bottled water to all patients and staff within the hospital.

Dr Samuel Goodwin, Deputy Director of Medical and Clinical Services, Central Australia Health Service said

“It follows that there will be some inconvenience whilst we wait for results, however patient safety is our highest priority.”

“It should be emphasised that the results identified present a low risk to public health,” he said.

Final test results are expected to be received in the coming days and further advice will be provided at that time.

Both Central Australia Health Service and Top End Health Service have rigorous water quality testing process in place for all Northern Territory hospitals.
