Strong progress is being made on the rebuilding program in Galiwin’ku, Milingimbi and Ramingining and regional homelands after the devastation of Cyclone Lam earlier this year.
The Territory Government has partnered with Arnhem Land Progress Aboriginal Corporation (ALPA) to develop innovative labour market models for local Yolngu workers involved in the rebuilding projects.
Director
of Rebuilding and Community Development, Bob Beadman said as part of this partnership,
the employment models will support mobility between employers and comprehensive
training which matches the skills needed to support workers in their jobs.
“ALPA
is developing a responsive labour coordination service to connect employers to
a local and skilled Yolngu workforce, while also developing supported pathways
for the workforce to undertake training where required so that they have the
skills to take up employment,” Mr Beadman said.
“This
will include engaging Aboriginal people as apprentices or trainees to complete
trades and other relevant qualifications through local contract work or other
employment opportunities that may arise.”
ALPA
General Manager Enterprise and Community Services, Chris Hayward said the labour
contractor models will be flexible and responsive to local economic conditions,
industry needs and market opportunities as they develop through the East Arnhem
region.
“Pathways
for local indigenous workers to complete trades based traineeships and
apprenticeships in their own communities whilst still being compatible with
flexible contracting work arrangements will be developed as part of this
exciting initiative,” Mr Hayward said.
“ALPA
sees this as a great opportunity to capacity build the regional indigenous
workforce of East Arnhem Land and underpin future economic growth."
The
Project will be rolled out first in Galiwin’ku, to facilitate the housing
rebuild program and then the subsequent longer term works, before being
delivered in Ramingining and Milingimbi.
ALPA are holding an information and sign up day for Galiwin’ku
construction jobs today at 11am at the Birrk Birrk Training Centre.
