Bushfires NT is urging anyone with information about suspicious wildfires in the Top End to dob in a firebug.
Assistant
Director Andrew Turner said dozens of wildfires had already impacted the Top
End so far this year with Bushfires NT attending about 30 wildfires in and
around the Katherine region alone.
Mr
Turner said this includes several suspiciously lit fires in the Venn region
south of Katherine which Bushfires NT staff and volunteers have fought to
prevent highly valuable horticultural areas from being burned.
“Hot,
dry and windy conditions mean that any fires lit now puts people’s lives and
property at risk,” Mr Turner said.
“I
urge anyone tempted to light a fire to think carefully about the consequences
of their actions or they could face prosecution if they’re caught doing the
wrong thing.
“The
latest suspiciously lit wildfire started earlier today along the Stuart
Highway, north of Burrell Creek near the Adelaide River township.
“Anyone
with information about this incident is urged to call Bushfires NT on 89220827
or NT Police on 131444 so it can be investigated further.
“Bushfires
NT currently has two graders, two planes, a helicopter as well as staff and
volunteers on the ground battling this wildfire with the support of nearby
landholders, and NT Police have been called in to help direct traffic.”
Hot,
dry and windy conditions are set to continue for the next few days and a fire
weather warning has been issued for the Northern Fire Protection Zone.
A
Fire Ban has also been declared for a 24 hour period for Wednesday 29 July for
the Northern Fire Protection Zone.
