Safety first at the Royal Darwin Show

NT WorkSafe

NT WorkSafe were amongst the first to see the sights and sounds at the Royal Darwin Show, as Workplace Safety Inspectors conducted safety checks before the gates opened to the public today.

Senior Workplace Safety Inspector Allan Fischer said it was important that the rides were regularly inspected and maintained for the safety of the public.

“I’m getting a bit old for some of the newer rides and generally leave them for the youngsters and people with a more adventurous spirit,” said Mr Fischer.

“While the rides have been mechanically engineered for safety, the speed and movement of some of these rides can cause mechanical wear and tear.”

“So it is important that there is a stringent inspection and maintenance program in place,” said Mr Fischer.

Owners and operators have a responsibility to ensure the safe operation of amusement rides.

Workplace Safety Inspectors have been examining the ride certification, insurance records and auditing the maintenance log books. The Inspectors have also conducted visual inspections of the rides checking restraints systems and looking for visible wear and tear on chains, joints or other moving parts.

Electrical Safety Inspectors from NT WorkSafe have also been at the show grounds checking the electrical installations in sideshow ally and the pavilions.
