Be clean and safe this Territory Day

Parks and Wildlife Commission of the Northern Territory

Territorians are urged to be responsible with fireworks this Territory Day and pick up their rubbish.

Parks and Wildlife Commission NT (PWCNT) Northern Parks Acting Director, Lincoln Wilson, said while most people do the right thing and take their rubbish with them, there is still always some mess left behind.

“Casuarina Coastal Reserve is home to several unique and vulnerable species of wildlife as well as being a popular area to celebrate Territory Day,” Mr Wilson said.

“People who enjoy the reserve need to be aware that the eight kilometres of beach can take more than six hours to clean on 2 July.

“Each year Casuarina Coastal Reserve hires two, eight metre bins for the Territory Day clean up.  Each year both bins fill to overflow and last year they held 1.9 tonnes of rubbish.”

“Rangers will be patrolling on Territory Day and will be handing out complimentary garbage bags during the evening.

“Parks and Wildlife Rangers collect hundreds of 78 litre garbage bags each year at the Casuarina Coastal Reserve for Territory Day clean up.

“We urge people to utilise these garbage bags and skips that are made available to dispose of all their rubbish.”

Parks and Wildlife rangers, along with Larrakia rangers and low-security prisoners will clean up Casuarina Coastal Reserve on 2 July.

People letting off fireworks along a beach during Territory Day celebrations are urged to do so below the high tide mark to reduce fire risk.
