Progress continuing for $90 million Cyclone Lam rebuild

Department of the Chief Minister

Up to 80 homes have been identified for replacement in the Galiwin’ku following Severe Tropical Cyclone Lam.

The Galiwin’ku community leaders have been clear that half of these houses should be rebuilt quickly and the other half built over the longer term so local residents can be strongly involved and take up training and other development opportunities.

Regional Recovery Coordinator, Jim Rogers said a fast build program is being commenced as quickly as possible involving the delivery of around 40 houses.

“A tender was released today for the first tranche of 20 houses to be built on Galiwin’ku to ensure priority is given to getting the most affected families back into a home,” Mr Rogers said.

The homes will be three bedroom dwellings and a further package of work to deliver the next 20 houses is also being developed.

“For the remaining households, there will be a program delivered over a longer period to provide local opportunities for real jobs, training and community development,” Mr Rogers said.

Temporary transportable accommodation is currently being installed in Galiwin’ku to house displaced residents while their homes are repaired and/or replaced with the first families expected to move in soon.

The Northern Territory Government has allocated over $90 million in the 2015-16 Territory budget to ensure the rebuilding process can progress efficiently across the affected communities.
