Public Assistance Sought To Help Catch Croc Killers

Parks and Wildlife Commission of the Northern Territory

The Parks and Wildlife Commission NT (PWCNT) is reminding the public that killing, selling or possessing crocodiles without a permit is illegal and anyone caught doing so will be prosecuted.

Anyone found guilty of killing crocodiles without a permit could face a maximum fine of $74,500 or five years imprisonment.

The reminder comes following the discovery of another dead crocodile this week, this time at Shady Camp east of Darwin, following a report from a regular camper yesterday.

Wildlife Operations acting director Tracey Duldig said the 2.7m dead crocodile was found floating upside down with three bullet holes in it near the Shady Camp barrage.

“It’s extremely disappointing to hear of another dead crocodile being found in our waters,” Ms Duldig said.

“We understand several shots were fired near Shady Camp on Saturday night so we urge anyone with information about this incident to contact us so we can make further inquiries.

“Today’s report follows an incident earlier this week that involved the killing and beheading of a 3m croc at Big Horse boat ramp near Timber Creek, which we are investigating together with police.

“We are also asking for public assistance in relation to two men believed to be attempting to sell a baby crocodile on Mitchell Street earlier this week.

“This activity could be related to the discovery of a dead baby freshwater crocodile between Mitchell Street and The Esplanade on Tuesday morning.

“And we are also investigating an incident that took place last weekend, which involved the dumping of two dead crocodiles, approximately 60cm long, within the grounds of Malak Primary School.

“The two dead crocodiles, which weren’t at the school last Friday, were collected by a wildlife ranger on Monday and had their tails removed.

“If anyone saw anything suspicious or knows anything, they are urged to call the Parks and Wildlife Commission NT on 0401115702.”
