The Northern Territory continues to build its reputation as a great filming and production destination with next week’s national release of 8MMM Aboriginal Radio on ABC1.
Screen Territory acting director Meredith Garlick said the six-part television series was developed locally with all of the filming done in Alice Springs where 8MMM Aboriginal Radio is set.
The
lead cast includes Territorians Shari Seebens and Trisha Morton-Thomas with an
estimated 300 Alice Springs locals employed as extras.
The
production also created full time local employment for at least 25 crew over a
six week period, as well as additional employment in the scriptwriting,
development and production of the series.
The
synopsis is that 8MMM Aboriginal Radio runs
on the smell of an oily rag and the enthusiasm for its motley Indigenous crew.
“8MMM Aboriginal Radio demonstrates the
continual emergence of the Northern Territory as a great place to produce and
film quality television shows and movies,” Ms Garlick said.
“The
series is a landmark television event for the Territory, being Australia’s
first Indigenous narrative comedy series and represents a significant milestone
for production in the Territory.
“Screen
Territory is proud to have supported the filming, production and development of
8MMM Aboriginal Radio with $70,000 in
grant funding and I look forward to viewing the first episode.
“Congratulations
to Alice Springs producers Trisha Morton-Thomas and Rachel Clements and their
colleagues at Alice Springs-based production company Brindle Films on the
success of 8MMM Aboriginal Radio and
getting it out to a national audience.”
The
Alice Springs Town Council is supporting this Sunday’s advance screening by
offering the use of Council’s inflatable screen and Council lawn as a venue.
The
advance screening of 8MMM Aboriginal
Radio episode one will start around 7pm (depending on sunset) with national
audiences able to see the first episode from 9.30pm on Wednesday 29 April 2015.
