Notice of Proposed Public Restricted Areas for Nightcliff

The City of Darwin has applied to the Director-General of Licensing to declare the following areas in Nightcliff, as Public Restricted Areas pursuant to part VII of the Liquor Act:

  • the area referred to as “Bagot Court Park”; and

  • the area of footpath on the southern side of the Progress Drive between Nightcliff Road and Dick Ward Drive.

A notice of application for declaration of these areas was placed in today’s NT News inviting individuals and bodies to lodge a written submission by close of business, Monday 18 May 2015.

The City of Darwin has advised that ongoing incidents of anti-social behaviour and disturbances have occurred at these locations. The majority of these incidents are associated with alcohol consumption and the City of Darwin believes by strengthening the existing restrictions this will have a positive effect on reducing the amount of alcohol related harm in the area.

The application was made to Licensing NT after consultation with key stakeholders, including the Northern Territory Police who provided a letter of support for this application.

As part of the process, the Director-General is required to conduct an inquiry and consider the views of the community and must consider the views of the following:

  • individuals who live or work, or propose to live or work in the area;

  • a body (whether incorporated or not) that has, or proposes to have, an address in the area; and

  • the Police Force, an Agency and any other authorities established by a law of the Northern Territory.

 If the proposed Public Restricted Areas mentioned above is gazetted as Public Restricted Areas, it will be an offence to consume liquor in those restricted areas.
