March into the Desert Park

Parks and Wildlife Commission of the Northern Territory

The Alice Springs Desert Park invites the community to ‘March into the Desert Park’ on Friday, 20 March.

Desert Park Director, Paul Ah Chee said ‘March into the Desert Park’ is a family night for local residents and tourists alike where visitors will be able to enjoy a marvellous night of live entertainment, activities for children, displays, food and drinks.

“If you think you have seen the Desert Park, think again!” Mr Ah Chee said.

“This event is the perfect opportunity to see what is new in the Park and to help us celebrate another successful year, while preparing for an exciting year ahead.

“There will be a variety of activities and events spread across the Park, including live entertainment in the courtyard until 8pm.

“The acoustic folk rock band Katie Harder and the Artful Dodgers will be joining us and there will be a drumming performance from Tangentyere youth group, Drum Atweme.

“For the kids, there will be face painting, a colouring-in competition, appearances from our mates Bilby and Spencer the Burrowing Frog and science stations where you will be able to explore flora and fauna under microscopes.

“There will be a special opportunity to see a training session take place with the raptors of the Nature Theatre and you’ll have the chance to get up close with our reptiles in the Nocturnal House, while our horticulturalist will also be on hand to offer some handy tips on growing a desert garden.

“Visitors will also be able to try their hand at boomerang throwing, discover the art of sand drawings and take a bush tucker walk with our Aboriginal guides.

“The Friends of the Desert Park will be running a BBQ on the night and Coolamon Café will also be open for tasty dinner options, while there will be displays from Birdlife Central Australia, the Parks and Wildlife Commission of the NT and the Olive Pink Botanic Gardens.

“And don’t miss out on renewing or purchasing a Territorian Pass on the night – all those who do will go into the draw to win an exclusive behind the scenes tour of the Desert Park.”

The free March into the Desert Park event is from 5pm – 8pm on Friday, 20 March 2015.
