International students the target of Philippines and Singapore delegation

The Department of Business has partnered with Charles Darwin University (CDU) on a Northern Territory (NT) delegation targeting international students in the Philippines and Singapore. The delegation is travelling from 3-15 March 2015, promoting the NT as a study destination of choice and providing potential international students with study and migration options for the future.

The delegation is a partnership aimed at building the NT labour market and economy.

Monica Turvey from the International Office at CDU said “partnering with the Department of Business to promote the Northern Territory as a quality study destination with migration and employment options has delivered success for the university.”

At the beginning of the 2015 academic year, around 15% of the 1298 international students enrolled at CDU were from the Philippines. These students have Australian qualifications, good English language skills and have experienced what the Territory has to offer both in jobs and in lifestyle.

International students who have successfully completed studies at CDU are potentially a good source of skilled migrants for NT employers. Visas held by most CDU students have some work rights and many students seek to work part-time in skilled or semi-skilled roles in a range of sectors including construction, transport, retail, hospitality and security.

The NT Government recognises the valuable contribution international students make to the local economy both during and after their studies.
