The Parks and Wildlife Commission of the NT (PWCNT) are warning people to Be Crocwise at Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve after recent reports of risky behaviour.
PWCNT Acting Community Engagement Manager & Digital Media Officer, Michael Barritt said in recent months the Freshwater Crocodiles at Fogg Dam have been spotted quite regularly.
“The freshies have even been seen sunning themselves up on the dam wall, which has given visitors a great opportunity to see these fascinating crocodiles in the wild,” Mr Barritt said.
“Sadly, there have been some visitors that have taken the opportunity for a snappy selfie with these wild animals and have been striking a pose with them by getting incredibly close.
“Although freshies are less dangerous than their relatives, the Saltwater Crocodile, it certainly doesn't make them harmless.
“Freshies can give a nasty bite with their razor shape teeth if they feel threatened and approaching too close is enough to make them feel threatened, with the smallest wound will usually get continually infected as well.
“So enjoy the Reserve, enjoy looking at the resident freshies and keep a safe distance of at least 15m, and the dam has just started to overflow so a visit will reward you with an up close view of a variety of waterbirds.
“People should remember that Saltwater Crocodiles also occur in the Reserve, where a massive 4.25m saltie was caught just under two years ago.
“Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve, 70km east of Darwin, which is part of the Adelaide River catchment, and public safety is our top priority which is why we have a permanent trap set at Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve.”
Seven Saltwater Crocodiles have been removed from Fogg Dam since 2013, which only reduces the risk to visitors – it does not make is safe. Remember that walking on the dam wall is not permitted due to the risk from Salties.
The Parks and Wildlife Commission NT urges the public to BE CROCWISE and remember that croc danger is real so don’t risk your life. For more information go to www.nt.gov.au/becrocwise
