The Northern Territory Environment Protection Authority has completed an investigation of a complaint regarding the burial of construction and demolition waste on a private property in the Humpty Doo area.
Construction and demolition waste may contain listed waste or other waste substances that may leach into the environment and cause pollution of soil and/or groundwater. Pollution of soil or groundwater may harm the environment.
It is an offence under the Waste Management and Pollution Control Act to store a waste where it might reasonably be expected to cause environmental harm.
In January 2015, the NT EPA issued two authorised officer directions to the persons involved to remove the construction and demolition waste and dispose of the material at an NT EPA approved facility. Action to clean up the waste was undertaken at the disposer's expense.
If you see someone doing something that you think may cause environmental harm please email pollution@nt.gov.au or telephone the Pollution Hotline on 1800 064 567.
