On 20 November 2014 the Northern Territory Government announced a review of the commercial passenger vehicle (CPV) industry, which included a Position Paper to help guide discussion. The CPV industry includes taxis, minibuses, private hire vehicles including limousines, motor omnibuses, courtesy vehicles, special purpose and tourist vehicles.

Department of Transport Chief Executive Clare Gardiner-Barnes said the aim of the Position Paper and consultation is to improve the industry for operators, drivers and passengers, and to allow the industry to grow and develop in line with the commercial and lifestyle needs of Territorians.  

“The Paper proposes a range of reforms aimed at allowing the industry to develop freely, driven by customer demand and simplifying the industry regulation and compliance regime while improving safety for passengers and drivers alike.

“This is an important service industry for the Territory and we want passengers in particular to take a moment to let us know what they would like to see from the industry in the future. The industry needs to be responsive to the pressures of population growth, have a focus on quality service and hold the needs of customers as its primary driver.

“We also want to hear from drivers about the things they think are important and areas with a special interest and need in the CPV industry, such as the disability sector. 

“Feedback to date has been fantastic, with more than 300 submissions received from a range of industry and consumer participants, following information and industry briefings late last year in Gove, Katherine, Yulara, Alice Springs and Darwin.

“I invite everyone who has ever used or worked in this important customer service industry to provide comments and suggestions to improve the Territory’s CPV industry,” Ms Gardiner-Barnes said.
