Rescued Turtle Ready to be Released

Parks and Wildlife Commission of the Northern Territory

An injured Northern Snapping Turtle that was rescued by a fisherman from Hardies Billabong is ready to be released back into the wild.

Territory Wildlife Park Curator of Life Sciences, Dion Wedd said the male turtle was handed into Humpty Doo veterinary clinic in June, where the Territory Wildlife Park then took over the care.

“The turtle had a fish hook stuck in his neck that was successfully removed by the Humpty Doo vets and he was placed on antibiotics, however he failed to improve and would not feed,” Mr Wedd said.

“After several more weeks, the turtle underwent a second operation to remove infected tissue around the damaged area of his neck and was again placed on antibiotics.

“After three months the turtle was still not eating and his condition was deteriorating.

“The Animal Services team at the Territory Wildlife Park would not give up and persisted with their attempts to hand feed the turtle and eventually he took some food.

“He is now eating very well, has put on some weight and is fully recovered to be released back into Hardies Billabong.

“This turtle was given the chance to survive thanks to the fisherman who handed him into Humpty Doo vets and we would love to involve him in the turtle’s release.

“If you are the kindly fisherman and would like to help take the turtle back to his home, please contact us at the Territory Wildlife Park on 8988 7200.”
