Department of Education Inaugural NT Schools Science Fair

The inaugural Northern Territory Schools Science Fair is being held at Charles Darwin University (CDU) on Friday 16 August, with the theme Cultivating Diversity for Sustainable Futures.

Students will have the opportunity to engage and learn from community groups, local and national organisations, businesses and experts in the field of sustainability who will present, exhibit and provide demonstrations on sustainable concepts and ideas.

A range of immersive and hands-on learning opportunities will be available to students attending the fair, including a range of digital devices such as virtual reality goggles, electronic circuits and beebots, along with drones and microscopes.

Department of Education Chief Executive Karen Weston says the event aims to inform and inspire students to consider a career in science, technology, engineering or maths (STEM).

“The NT Schools Science Fair will demonstrate to students how science is addressing critical challenges regarding sustainability, and by doing so, showcasing some of the potential career options available for them to make a positive impact on our environment.

The event is designed to provide students with meaningful learning experiences and develop thinkers ready to meet environmental challenges in the future.

We’re grateful for the many exhibitors and experts who have collaborated with the department to create this event, who also see the value in exposing Territory students to careers that focus on addressing the critical challenges of sustainability.”

The event has already attracted 14 schools, with approximately 220 primary and secondary students expected to participate, and 20 exhibits and presenters.

The Northern Territory School Science Fair is part of the 2024 National Science Week, which runs from 10 to 18 August, with the theme of Species Survival – More Than Just Sustainability.

The event is open to all NT schools and opportunities for online participation are available.

The 2024 NT Science Fair will be held on Friday, 16 August 2024 at CDU, Casuarina Campus from 9:30 am - 2:30 pm.
