Creating further Investment Opportunities in the Territory
9 September 2021
To create a $40 billion economy by 2030 the Territory Labor Government is generating more opportunities for investors and developers across the Territory.
In line with the Territory Economic Reconstruction report, the Government has accelerated the capture and availability of vegetation information around the Territory to ensure economic development is balanced with protecting key environmental assets.
The recent addition of another 15,000 vegetation records from across the Northern Territory now brings the total number of sites to over 75,000, comprising more than 875,000 individual records. This data is now available online in a summarised format, saving landholders and potential investors time and making it easier for them to make informed decisions around land clearing.
Vegetation mapping has recently been undertaken in:
- Gunn Point,
- Larrimah,
- Roper Valley,
- Wadeye,
- Sturt Plateau ;and
- Barkly Tableland regions of the Northern Territory.
Vegetation information can also be used to assist:
- Landholders develop new agricultural land while protecting our unique flora,
- Support new innovative satellite based vegetation mapping and monitoring projects,
- Estimate biomass in tropical savannahs,
- Fire management,
- Habitat mapping,
- Assist weed mapping, and
- Landholders identify soil types
Field teams are currently collecting vegetation information on Groote Eylandt, in the Katherine vicinity and in Darwin Harbour’s mangroves. These studies are often carried out in collaboration with a range of industry and Aboriginal organisations, ensuring they are targeted towards the needs of the community. Vegetation information will underpin economic development and land use planning for decades.
The new vegetation information is now viewable on NR Maps [https://nrmaps.nt.gov.au/nrmaps.html#5786a448-c300-4369-8fbb-36fc767f8758] and available for download.
