Department of Education and Training Have your say on the shift away from middle schools in Darwin, Palmerston and Alice Springs
28 March 2025
The Department of Education and Training is committed to delivering the recommendations from the Review of Secondary Education in the Northern Territory, with the first stage of targeted engagement with school communities now complete.
Initial engagement with school councils and staff on the proposed future for impacted middle and senior secondary schools in Darwin, Palmerston and Alice Springs concluded last week.
The department is now calling for wider community feedback on the proposed approach to secondary education.
The new secondary education system will focus on raising student attendance, boosting literacy and numeracy, and aligning education with the Territory's industry needs, providing our students with certainty and security for a brighter future.
Whether you have a child currently attending primary school, middle school, senior school, or a non-government school, the short survey will provide you with an opportunity to have your say on the future modelling of secondary schooling in the Northern Territory.
The survey is now open and will close on 16 April 2025.
The focus of school community engagement this term has been in urban areas. Engagement with regional, remote and very remote communities will commence next term.
A phased transition to the new system of secondary education will commence from next year.
The department is committed to providing high-level support to ensure a smooth transition, particularly for schools, students, teachers and communities experiencing significant change.
